SCV - Col. Robert G. Shaver Camp 1655

Events and Service

Service

Jonesboro Memorial
The camp in cooperation with the Craighead County Historical society has established a memorial on the grounds of the Craighead County Courthouse honoring the 2 Confederate and 7 Federal fighting men who died there and have since gone unhonored.

Presentation
Two of our compatriots, Randal Gerdes and Gabby Gathright, presented a living history demonstration at a local school. The students also got to examine war relics, soldier items, and period medical equipment.

The Five Smith Brothers
We will soon be putting up tombstones and holding a service for the five Smith brothers. All of them served Arkansas and the Confederacy.

Confederate Memorial Day
The Camp honored 19 area veterans at 6 different cemeteries. Family members of some of the veterans were on hand. Private William M. Loudermilk, the oldest Arkansas Confederate when he died at 104 was one of the soldiers honored.

Columbus Battlefield Letters
The camp recently discovered several Civil War letters written by Confederate soldier Willoughby Dorrion during his service. Copies of these letters were presented to the park historian at Columbus, KY. The letters may contain hitherto unknown information about the battlefield and we hope they will assist them in their ongoing efforts to preserve and interpret the site.
